The promotion was announced by Labour’s Acting Leader, Harriet Harman MP, who yesterday confirmed several frontbench shadow ministerial changes.

Stephen, who previously served as PPS to the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and as an Opposition Whip (working with the BIS and Wales teams) since October 2013, said: “It is a real honour to have been asked to serve as a Shadow Minister, leading on trade and industry.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with Chuka Umunna and Labour’s business team, just as I have as an Opposition Whip, helping to provide effective scrutiny of the government, and to build relationships with key stakeholders in business and industry.
“I worked for many years on international trade and investment issues with NGOs and in government, and have worked hard to build relationships with key businesses locally since I was elected. I hope to put this experience to good use as part of the shadow Business, Innovation and Skills team.”
