Stephen leads campaign to save Coal Exchange and secure jobs, facilities and heritage for local area

Stephen is calling for urgent action to secure the future of the historic Coal Exchange in Butetown – and is urging people to get involved in a campaign to ensure that this important landmark is preserved and restored for generations to come.

His call for action follows the news that GYG Exchange Limited, the company that owns the historic building, has gone into liquidation.

The Labour MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, whose own constituency office stands just opposite in historic Mount Stuart Square, said:

“The Coal Exchange is a key part of the heritage of Cardiff and an iconic building. For so many years it was a symbol of Cardiff’s worldwide importance, and in latter years as a well loved music and entertainment venue, but today it stands as a sad shadow of its former self.

“In the current financial circumstances and amid pressures on services and workers across the city, in my view it simply won’t be possible for Cardiff Council to step in to save the building.

“I am seeking urgent meetings and will be asking the Council and others to work with me to bring together a campaign or consortium to save the building. I would urge anyone who wants to get involved to come forward and contact my office.

“It would be fantastic to bring new life to this grand old building and ensure it is retained for the local community and the whole city,” he added.

“I am hugely proud of the development of Cardiff Bay, Butetown and Grangetown – but it is a tragedy for me that while the new blocks have gone up, some of our great heritage is decaying instead of being brought back into use and most importantly generating local jobs and facilities.”

Stephen is delighted that so many people have already come forward to offer their support – you can join them by contacting the constituency office on 02920 452072 or by clicking this link.
