Passion, commitment and positive ideas on show at Coal Exchange public meeting

ALMOST 100 people attended a public meeting to discuss the future of the historic Coal Exchange.

The event was arranged after Stephen called for urgent action to secure the future of the iconic building, after the previous owner went into administration.

The Cardiff South and Penarth MP co-chaired the meeting with Nerys Lloyd-Pierce of Cardiff Civic Society,

After a passionate introduction by Dr Elaine Davey, of the Victorian Society and Cardiff Civic Society, those attending split into three working groups to discuss different aspects – the preferred future use of the building, the preservation and conservation aspects, and the position on future financial responsibility and governance.

After lively discussions in all three groups, their findings were reported back to the meeting, and it was agreed that in order to take the campaign forward, a working group should be formed, with those keen on leading this putting their names forward. This could lead to the formation of a charitable trust among other options.

Speaking after the meeting, Stephen said: “I was delighted with the turn-out, and with the discussions on the night. It was clear that many people are passionately committed to seeing this building saved, and the expertise of those attending and the ideas put forward were hugely positive.

“Once arrangements have been made for the formation of a working group, next steps will be decided. Of course all are welcome to get involved in the campaign, whether or not you were able to attend the meeting – contact my office for details.”
